One Month Updates!

Happy One Month Old Emerson!

Its hard to believe our baby boy is already one month old! I was so worried about the unknown delivering at 32 weeks gestation. But Emerson came out fighting, and hasn't stopped since!

The first 25 days were spent in the Special Care Nursery, and the last 5 days were at home. Our journey in the special care nursery was emotional. Lots of ups, lots of downs, and lots of tears! But the entire staff was with us every step of the way. Their guidance and support was incredible. Some of the most compassionate nurses and doctors I have ever met. Not just for Emerson's care but towards us as parents as well. They made this road a little bit easier to travel!

Most if not all of Emerson's first's were at the hospital. And while being in the NICU wasnt our ideal plan, it was comforting to have the nurses help us through some of those firsts. Bath. Diaper change. How to hold a baby so tiny. Feeding. Burping. Taking vitals. Breastfeeding. Changing Clothes. And the list goes on and on. :)

In the 5 days that we were at home, we got to try a lot of new things. Like where would he like to sleep? We tried out the bassinet, the swing, the crib, the pack n play, but what he loved the most was falling asleep on mommy or daddy's chest. And we loved that after leaving him every night for 24 days! We also made daily trips to Babies-R-Us. Amazing how much stuff you don't realize you need for a baby! Im sure they know us by first name in that store. :p

So how was Emerson's first month?

Weight: 3lbs, 14.5 oz

Height: 17.5 inches

Hair Color: Blonde Fuzz

Eye Color: Blue...yes blue eyed, blonde hair baby...whos baby is this?! LOL

Clothing size: Through the month Emerson has been in preemie clothes. They were a little big in the earlier days, but fit perfectly now. He can also fit into newborn onesies.

Diaper size: Emerson is in the Swaddler Preemie Diapers - and those are even a little big on him! Once we get a little fat on his tiny behind, we may be able to move up to newborns! :)

Feeding: We started the month of with a feeding tube. Emerson started off with bottle feedings a couple times a day, and gradually built up more and more. It was amazing to see him take to bottle feedings. Each day he got stronger and stronger, and one day he pulled out the feeding tube when the nurses weren't looking. And from that day on he took full bottle feedings. Our little champ! He is averaging about 35-40ml every 3 hours, mostly formula. Have been having problems with my milk supply. But keeping at it and hoping that I can give him more breast milk in the second month!

We tried out 3 different type of bottles before we found one that worked with Emerson! Every bottle had to slow or to fast of a flow. Or the bottle was to big and we couldn't give him chin support or stroke his cheek to help him finish. Finally Dr. Browns bottles with preemie nipples seemed to fit him just perfect. He was eating like a rockstar after that :)

Sleep: While in the NICU, he was on 3 hour sleep schedule. Once we brought him home, he stayed on a 3 hour shifts through the day, and 3-4 through the night. Grant has been taking the midnight shift, so I've been sleeping from 11pm to about 6am. My husband is amazing right? :) Once I take over at 6am, Grant gets some shut eye till around noon, or later if we have no appointments. We are starting to figure out a schedule that will work once we are both back to work. Thats when reality will sink in right? LOL

Milestones:
*Feeding Tube Came Out!
*Full Bottle Feedings
*Passed Hearing Test
*Lifting and turning head
*Came home from the NICU!

Loves: Snuggling on mommy and daddy's chest to sleep, pacifier, car rides. pouting his lower lip, which is so adorable by the way!

Dislikes: Being woken up! Diaper Changes. Bath Time. Which is odd because he loved bath time at the hospital!

Adventures: First bath. Visit to the pediatrician. Newborn pictures Baby Bella Photography. Coming home from the NICU. Meeting his furry sister and brothers. First Car Ride.

Mommy and Daddy could not get through the month without: NICU nurses!!! Swaddling. When all else fails, swaddle! And most importantly, each other ;)
