This morning I received a call from the hospital. I recognized the number right away and thought, oh no what happened. Turns out it was the phone call I wasn't expecting. It was one of the nurses, Kelly, and she had great news. Dr. D thinks its about time for Emerson to come home! I said are you sure?!
Dr. D thinks that Emerson is doing everything he should at this point, and asked Kelly what she though about him going home. Kelly tried really hard to find a reason to keep him, but she said he is doing amazing and that bittersweet moment has come - he is ready to go home! So they set a weight goal of 1750 grams and think he should reach that by tomorrow or Wednesday. Kelly said to bring in the car seat and they will get the car seat test checked off the list. The car seat test is making sure Emerson can sit in a car seat for one hour. I have to admit, the minute we got off the phone I was super excited, yet freaking out at the same time! When Grant got home from work he had a very similar reaction too! LOL
When we got to the hospital Emerson was sleeping, and Kelly came in to talk to us. She started covering some of the basics and than our long list of questions started. Funny how you think you only have a few questions than your brain gets flooded with what if scenarios. LOL Kelly was great at answering all our questions while reassuring us that we are ready for this. I think we probably took up an hour of her time with all the questions. Thank you Kelly! I definitely felt a little more confident after talking to her :) Dr. D came in a little bit later to share in the excitement of Emerson going home, and also to see if we had any questions. Believe it or not we were all questioned out. At least for now. :)
At Emerson's 5pm feeding, I fed him the little breast milk I had and the rest in formula. Kelly said to let Emerson take as much of the formula that he wanted and he finished off right around the 30cc mark, between both bottles.
The nurses had a meeting around his 5pm feeding, so a few popped in to tell Emerson to have a big poop so his weigh in would be not as much tonight. Awe, they are to sweet. I'm sure that he will miss them as much as they will miss him! I know Grant and I will too!
In between feedings, Grant and I were in planning mode. Lots of lists to be made - groceries, baby necessities, errands, etc. Guess we aren't as ready as we thought we are! Ha! While we were making these lists, I heard an explosion in Emerson's crib. I said to the nurses, well he had his daily poop...we may have a loss after all. LOL I got Emerson in a clean diaper and took his temperature for his 8pm vitals. Yep I was right, big, dirty, smelly mess! And a good temp. Next up was weigh in....and we all were surprised when he was up 30 grams! That 1750 goal is right around the corner :)
At this feeding, we were switching Emerson's formula from special care formula to NeoSure. This is the formula that we will be feeding him when he is at home. He had two bottles for 8pm, one had a little breast milk and his vitamins. The other bottle had the new formula. Daddy was feeding Emerson and he took the first bottle great. The second bottle he seemed to get a little stubborn. Mommy gave it a try, and it seemed like he was grunting like he was pooping. But at the same time he wasn't really sucking or swallowing very well. I thought maybe it was the new formula. We did get down 30cc, but he just seemed out of it. We called Nicole, the night time nurse, in to see what she thought. She said she would keep an eye on it for the rest of the night.
As we were chatting with the Nicole and Angela, Emerson was in my lap and I could smell that Emerson had a poopy diaper. So changed him and he had another explosive diaper. No wonder he was fussy during his feeding! And I would have been out of it after those two big poops! :-p Grant and I are going to be like the blind leading the blind when Emerson is at home with us. Hahahahaha!
I really cant believe we are talking about discharge. This moment feels to good to be true! Things are really going to change in the next 48 hours. :)

Melissa is looking forward to: Tomorrow!
Melissa is grateful for: my organized husband! As much as I tease him about his lists and spreadsheets - it is what makes our life manageable and easier. Hes the glue that holds us together! xoxo
