Yesterday left me pretty emotionally all night and into this morning. I think I may be seeing signs of postpartum depression. I know that given the circumstances there is going to be days that I'm just full of tears. But all I had to do was say or hear Emerson's name, or even look at Grant and the tears would fill my eyes. I had to walk out of Panera while we were eating lunch because I couldn't stop crying! I'm going to see how the next week goes, and if I still feel like this I am definitely going to talk to my midwife about things.
About an hour after we got to the hospital, Gloria, Kristin and Jim came for a visit. I wasn't sure if I would be able to keep it together for a visit but it actually really helped. The love that oozes out for them for Emerson is really contagious :) The daytime nurse, Nikki, also had a great conversation with us about the Down syndrome diagnosis. That also helped a lot to. People have no idea, but they are helping me through in lots of small ways :)
Something adorable today that we noticed, is that Emerson has dimples! You can really see them when he suckles, or smiles. I can't wait till he gains a little more weight and see how prominent they get.
Emerson has been falling asleep when we bottle feed him. He seems to get worn out very fast from feedings and stimulation. So today we decided to let him rest in the isolette with gavage feedings. After all, he grows best when he's sleeping! We chose to hold him and try a bottle for his 8pm feeding. It was a great choice, because at the 8pm feeding he was the most awake that we have seen him all week :)
He does seem to be only able to bottle 10cc of 24cc. But the fact that he is bottle feeding at 33 weeks gestation is a huge milestone! Slowly and surely, the bottle feeding will come, until than we just listen to his cues and remain patient.
Notes from MyPreemieApp:
September 15, 2013 – Today Emerson Robert Goulet is 1 week and 1 day old and weighs 3 lbs 5 ozs. The nurses taking care of Emerson Robert Goulet are Angela, Nicole and Nikki.
We made progress. Feedings: Are up to 24cc
Another big event. Feeding: Bottle fed 10cc in the morning and evening. All others were gavage feedings.
Visitor: Aunt Gloria, Uncle Jim, Kristin
Melissa is feeling Hopeful and Sad.
Melissa is looking forward to: Finding out if Emerson's platelet count is still up. They will take blood work tomorrow morning.
Melissa is grateful for: having such a caring husband by my side through the
hard times!
