When we arrived at the hospital today Dr. Boxwalla, Neonatology, was checking in on Emerson. He said that everything looked great and Emerson would be up to full feedings (23cc) today. He has made great progress!!!
I fed Emerson at 2pm and he seems to be following the same pattern of taking 10cc, and than the remaining amount is tube fed. Grant wanted to do the 5pm feeding, which would be Daddy's first time feeding Emerson - exciting! Daddy got Emerson to take 10cc and watching him fed Emerson was absolutely adorable :) By the 8pm feeding, Emerson was only able to take 5cc. He was pretty worn out from all the bottle feeds, so the remaining food was gavage'd.
I took on changing Emerson's diapers before each feeding, and Daddy jumped in on swaddling after feedings. Grant is quite the swaddler! He wraps baby boy up like he's been doing it for years :)
I did learn something new from the nurses today. How to take Emerson's temperature! Not to hard. The challenge is trying to keep Emerson's arm down to get the temp. He does not like to be bothered! LOL
Overall Emerson seemed pretty worn out today. He was falling asleep halfway through each feeding. We are learning his feeding cues on what he can handle and when it is just to much. Still very thankful that he is even taking bottle feedings at 33 weeks gestation, but watching the struggles he does have his hard. This made me super emotional. Even when I tried to focus on the positive strides, I kept thinking about the struggles. I really try to allow myself to feel what I need to feel, but most of the crying went on through the night. :(
But tomorrow is a new day!
Notes from MyPreemieApp:
September 14, 2013 – Today Emerson Robert Goulet is 1 week old and weighs 3 lbs 4 ozs. The nurses taking care of Emerson Robert Goulet are Katy, Kelly, Nicole and Tammy.
Something happened for the first time. Temperature: Mommy learned how to take Emerson's temperature. Feeding: Daddy's first time feeding Emerson
We made progress. Feedings: Feedings are up to 23cc
Another big event. Visitor: Grandma and Grandpa.
Melissa is feeling Sad.
Melissa is looking forward to: No poking for Emerson tomorrow! He gets a day off from blood work :)
Melissa is grateful for: Emerson's vitals are consistently stable at 33 weeks gestation, and feedings are partly bottle fed at an age we didn't think they would be!
